Bobby Kolli: Daaku Maharaaj is a story centered around the transformation of Sitaram into Daaku Maharaaj. We’ve created a technically advanced film while focusing on subtle filmmaking and honest storytelling.
Q: How is it working with industry stalwarts like Bala Krishna and Chiranjeevi?
Bobby Kolli: Both Bala Krishna and Chiranjeevi have many common qualities as senior actors from the same generation. Their discipline towards the craft is incredible, and they are both workaholics. They always prioritize the well-being of their producers, working tirelessly in any conditions, whether it’s heat or rain, without any relaxation when the work on set needs to be done.
Q: Daaku Maharaaj seems to present a never-before-seen side of Balakrishna. Can you tell us more about it?
Bobby Kolli: If you observe, there’s often a certain loudness in Balakrishna’s recent performances. In this film, we attempted a much more subtle and settled portrayal. Personally, I admire his performance in Simha, especially in the doctor role, which was subtle yet impactful. My aim was to present him in that same restrained manner, and I hope I’ve been successful in achieving that.
Q: Balakrishna’s films typically have larger-than-life sequences. Does Daaku Maharaaj feature such moments?
Bobby Kolli: No, we did not focus on any over-the-top sequences. This is an honest attempt, and we kept the storytelling grounded in realism.
Q: Can you tell us about your experience working with Naga Vamsi?
Bobby Kolli: Naga Vamsi is a producer who is truly passionate about delivering a great film, especially with Nandamuri Balakrishna. He didn’t compromise on any technical aspects, which is why we brought in DOP Vijay Karthik Kannan. As a result, the visuals of the film have been receiving a lot of appreciation.
Q: How was your experience working with the three heroines in the film?
Bobby Kolli: It was a wonderful experience working with all of them. The film features two heroines: Shraddha Srinath and Pragya Jaiswal. Urvashi plays a crucial role, adding a typical glamour touch to the film. Going by the story, Shraddha has a larger scope for performance, and we also have Chandini Chowdary in an important role.
Q: Shooting in Rajasthan must have been challenging. Can you tell us more about that?
Bobby Kolli: Honestly, as actors or directors, we have some comforts, but I always worry about the unit. The crew had to endure the intense heat without any protection like umbrellas. Their challenges were much greater than ours, and I truly salute their dedication and hard work.
Q: What is one quality you’ve adopted from Nandamuri Balakrishna?
Bobby Kolli: Discipline. I already have some discipline, but seeing Bala Krishna Garu’s dedication has inspired me to adopt even more.
Q: How would you describe Bobby Deol?
Bobby Kolli: Bobby Deol is a very humble person. He’s extremely punctual and gave a fabulous performance in the film, keeping it subtle yet impactful.
